Weeping tiles are increasingly becoming a popular choice for basement waterproofing. For many properties in Vancouver, weeping tile installation is essential. The city’s infrastructure has many underground waterways that pose a threat to a house’s foundation. Some areas also have water table issues that might cause a leaky basement. A water table refers to the upper level of water that collects on the surface below it. And although the water table is several meters below your house’s foundation, heavy rainfall can cause the water levels to rise and seep into your basement.
Nonetheless, weeping tile installation is one of the many waterproofing techniques that help prevent water from entering and damaging your basement when your draining system fails.

- How Do Weeping Tiles Work?
Weeping tiles come in two types depending on where we install them: interior and exterior. Although the two kinds of weeping tiles are in different parts of the house, they both work to serve the same purpose: keeping water out of your basement.
- 1. Exterior Weeping Tiles
This type of weeping tile is installed around the perimeter of the house from the outside. This system consists of gravel, a plastic pipe, and a trench that channels water away from your house. When water seeps into the ground that surrounds your property, exterior weeping tiles filter it through the gravel then through the pores in the pipes. After that, the water is directed away from your home.
- 2. Interior Weeping Tiles
This kind of weeping tile is installed under the basement floor inside the house. To install interior weeping tiles, we dig a trench around the perimeter of the basement from the inside. Next, we install the pipe around the basement perimeter.
Moreover, installing interior weeping tiles often goes hand in hand with installing a sump pump. After we place the pipe in the trench, we connect its end to the sump pit where water collects. The sump pump will then expel the excess water out of the basement.
Homeowners should also bear in mind that the installation process for both types of weeping tiles requires excavation done by a professional plumber.
